Photo Albums: Thoughts on keeping your memories safe.
Hard drives break, technology evolves, and quietly becomes obsolete. Remember CDs? The CDs I used to back up my precious photos cracked and peeled, along with my files. There was no catastrophic fire or flood – the ravage of time and neglect slowly took my files. I didn’t notice till it was too late – I was too busy living in the now.
We may think our files are safe in JPEGs on Instagram, Tic Toc, or Facebook, but even these technologies will fade in popularity eventually, in favour of the next big thing, with new file systems and forward-looking technology. Like CDs, they will become obsolete, and so will their precious contents – our memories.
I didn’t make any physical copies of the images – after all, I had them backed up on CD! If I wasn’t so obsessed with the technology, I might have realised that printing my most important photos and putting them in a photo albums would have been the ultimate backup. I know better now, and my most cherished images are printed, placed in a photo album, and stored on a bookshelf – ready to be opened whenever I need a pick-me-up. While my Instagram will one day disappear into the ether – my images and family information will be preserved for the next generation.
Birthdays, baby photos, weddings, and little moments come flooding back as I open my photo albums. They are real, tactile, and in my hand.
